CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MAGAZINE DESIGN EDITOR

Job Title: Magazine Design Editor

Job Description: The Medium, which is U of T Mississauga's student newspaper, will publish a single-issue magazine to supplement its weekly issue this year. The magazine is set to be released in April; its theme will be a retrospective look at the Medium and at the Mississauga campus over the last 40 years of this publication's existence.

We have done a magazine before; please browse the most recent one at http://magazine.mediumutm.ca. Our main website is http://www.mediumutm.ca.

We're shooting for 40 pages, glossy paper, full colour, 8x10" (details not 100% settled). We need two designers to help us lay out articles and graphics, maintain a consistent style, and do illustrations.

Job Qualifications: Being well-trained in editorial design is essential. (Non-UTM students can apply.)

The ability to develop a brief style guide to keep the product consistent, especially since there will be two designers, is also required. It's a benefit to have collaborated on a product before.

Punctuality and organization are obvious requirements. We're students here and we know what it's like to have to balance work and school. We're giving ourselves 3–4 months to produce it in order to mitigate that problem, but please have a clear assessment of your time management skills!

Before you apply, browse the previous issue of the magazine to get an idea of the general principles that we follow in our design.

VTAPE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Fall 2013 and Winter 2014 Internship Opportunities at Vtape

Vtape is an information resource centre and distribution system specializing in video and media artworks. Founded in 1983 as a not-for-profit corporation, Vtape now represents more than 5,000 contemporary video artworks, making them accessible to an international client base of over 9,000 educators, curators, scholars and diverse public audiences. Drawing students from several post-secondary educational institutions, Vtape operates an ongoing program of valuable internships that support student skills development while contributing to the organization’s vitality and cultural relevance.

Vtape is currently soliciting applications for research interns to work during the fall 2013 or winter 2014 semesters.

Research Internship

Vtape’s research interns work with the organization’s extensive files of critical, theoretical and historical writings on video art, helping to keep the files up-to-date, organized and thoroughly catalogued. The Research Internship Program trains students or recent graduates to quickly read a text-based resource, enter the information into the relevant database, and create a brief synopsis. Interns are taught how to locate and copy articles through public, educational and on-line sources, and to catalogue and enter articles into our Critical Writing Index database (see http://www.vtape.org/research.htm). This work contributes to a unique on-site resource that makes information about video and media art and artists available to curators, artists, critics, educators, scholars and the public.

Fall Semester Deadline September 9th, 2013

Time commitment is four hours per week (one “shift”) during the fall semester, beginning the week of September 23rd, 2013.

Winter Semester Deadline December 9th, 2013

Time commitment is four hours per week (one “shift”) during the winter semester, beginning the week of January 13th, 2014.

Graduate Research Internship

Open to graduate students, this internship is designed to support a student who is working in a well-defined area of research related to video and media art. The internship allows a student to extend this research, while also contributing to Vtape’s unique collection of critical, theoretical and historical writings on video art. Alternatively, Vtape staff can help the student to develop a specific area of investigation. Part of the intern’s time will be spent off-site sourcing and copying relevant materials from public and institutional libraries, and part of the time interns work on-site at Vtape organizing and cataloguing these materials for inclusion in Vtape’s Critical Writing Index (see http://www.vtape.org/research.htm). Interns are trained in how to catalogue and enter articles in our Critical Writing Index database.

Distribution Internship

Open to students interested in video and media art marketing, promotion and distribution. The Internship will focus on research specific to expanding our client base of educational institutions, museums, galleries and festivals as well as assisting in implementing new promotional strategies. Interest in using social media as a marketing tool will be considered an asset.

Additional Information:

The Internships run parallel to the educational semester, lasting approximately twelve weeks. If you are interested in applying, please send your résumé. If you are a post-secondary student who can obtain a credit from this Internship, please forward the necessary paperwork to establish communication with your primary instructor.

Successful candidates will be engaged in a post-secondary education; a research or studio-based arts education in a college or university art program is considered an asset, along with interest in the media arts and knowledge of contemporary art practices. Computer literacy is a must (some basic Mac experience necessary), proficiency in English a requirement (oral and written), and strong research skills essential.

We value diversity in our workforce and encourage candidates to self-identify as members of the following designated groups:  women, visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities. Vtape is wheelchair accessible.

Letters and CV’s should be emailed to Deirdre Logue (deirdrel@vtape.org) at Vtape. Only candidates called for an interview will be notified.
